Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Patna | Sightseeing in Patna

Upon arrival in Patna, meet a Yatra tour representative and proceed towards hotel.
Patna, earlier known as Patliputra, is the capital city of Bihar. Dating its origin back to the period of the Maurya and Gupta dynasties, it is one of the oldest cities of the country. The city is an important centre for administration and education of the state. Located along the southern banks of the Ganga River, it is a prominent gateway to the famous Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage centres. Besides, it was also a birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh – the last Sikh guru.
As you reach the hotel, complete the check-in formalities and ease yourself. After relaxing for some time, you can start your sightseeing tour of the city.
Visit the Golghar, a granary built by Captain John Garstin in the year 1770 as a security measure to fight famine. Bounded by 3.6 m wide walls, this magnificent structure is 29 m high. From here, you can capture panoramic views of the entire city and the mighty Ganga River, meandering through the region.
Next, you can pay your visit to the famous Takht Sri Harmandir Ji. This holy site is one of the four sacred places of the Sikhism cult, as it was the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh saint. The temple complex enshrines the belongings of the Guru and some holy texts of Sikhs.
From here, you can move forward to Mahavir Mandir, which is one of the most popular temples of Lord Hanuman in the country. As the idol of Lord Hanuman here is believed to be a wish fulfiller, hordes of pilgrims come here to get their wishes fulfilled.
Later, come back to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 2 - Proceed to Bodhgaya via Nalanda and Rajgir (180 km/approx. 4.5 hours)

Get ready in the morning, check-out from the hotel and leave for the sacred Bodhgaya. En route visit the old towns of Nalanda and Rajgir.
Located at a distance of about 90 km from Bodhgaya, Nalanda is a significant centre of Buddhist learning. Founded in the 5th century AD, this town is widely famous for housing the first residential international university of the world.
On reaching Nalanda, you can start your local sightseeing tour by visiting the Nalanda University Ruins Archaeological Complex. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this place shot to prominence in 5th century AD as a monastic-cum-educational centre for Buddhist learning. This archaeological site comprises numerous structures but the most imposing one is the Temple No. 3. From its top, you can capture unrivalled views of the region.
Afterwards, you can move forward to the Great Stupa, a grand structure built as a result of seven successive accretions. These accretions were constructed to protect the original stupa.
Next, you can walk through the insightful Nalanda Archaeological Museum. Located opposite to the archaeological ruins of the Nalanda University, this museum houses a rich collection of Hindu and Buddhist artefacts. It also enshrines several undamaged statues of Lord Buddha.
From here, you can proceed towards Nalanda Multimedia Museum. It is a great place to learn about the history of the town as it displays the legendary past through multimedia presentations and 3D animations.
After a visit to this museum, you can now visit the Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, which is one of the renowned institutes to learn Pali and Buddhist literature. A large number of foreign travellers come here to learn Buddhism.
Next, you can pay homage at the Hiuen Tsang Memorial Hall – built in the loving memory of Hiuen Tsang, a Chinese traveller. His contribution to the literary works of the Nalanda University is praiseworthy as he gave a detailed description about the education system of the contemporary times.
Later move forward to Surajpur Baragaon, an old temple dedicated to Sun. A large number of devotees frequent this shrine during the months of April-May and October-November.
After a wonderful sightseeing tour, now you will proceed towards Rajgir.
Located 19 km from Nalanda, Rajgir was used to be the capital of the Magadha empire. Nestled in a serene valley, this place is known for its natural beauty. Besides, it is also a prominent pilgrimage centre for both Buddhists and Jains.
Soon after reaching Rajgir, you can proceed towards to the famous Vishwa Shanti Stupa. Also referred to as Griddhkoot, this stupa is constructed wholly in marble. On all the four corners of the stupa, there are glittering statues of Lord Buddha. As the stupa lies on a 400 m high hill, you can use the ropeway to reach to its top.
Afterwards, you can also visit some of the nearby monasteries that are located on the surrounding hills.
Thereafter, you can now drive to Bodhgaya – among the prominent Buddhist pilgrimage centres in the world. Located in the Gaya district of Bihar, it is this place only where Buddha attained enlightenment.
As you reach Bodhgaya, check-in at the hotel and relax yourself. Later, step out to explore the place on your own.In the evening, head back to the hotel for a good night’s sleep.

Day 3 - Sightseeing in Bodhgaya

Freshen up in the morning and get ready for enjoying your sightseeing tour of the place. You can visit the revered Mahabodhi Temple – one of the four places closely related to the life of Buddha. This archaeologically significant place is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple houses a grand black stone image of Lord Buddha and several votive stupas.
Later, return to the hotel for an overnight stay.
